The World Has Gone Crazy! Public Schools Are Horrible!
Yep, isn’t that the truth.
Not everyone can afford private schools or can homeschool kids, certainly not these days. But evil inundates our schools. You fear this as soon as you enroll your child. With new laws passed, our churches can’t even speak the truth without getting into lawsuits. Is battling this environment an impossible task?
There exists foul language, drugs, sex, and violence everywhere. Bullying, horrific clothing that barely exists. Racism, sexism, anti-Christian values in every way. Other kids deeply influence ours. They want to listen to music, and watch videos that are the antithesis of Christianity. Peer pressure is over-the-top. This is not exclusive to public schools. Christian schools are chockfull of the same problems.
What Do We Do?
Obviously, we can’t hover over our kids. In fact, that is smothering and it will drive your kids away faster than lightning to their peers for acceptance. Yeah, no.
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, instead, raise them up in the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.Ephesians 6:4
Spending time at home, church, time in prayer and study groups are great, in fact I recommend these. But, that too, can be a style of smothering, taking away your kid’s ability to reason and his or her concept of free will, will show up as … smothering.
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.Hebrews 10:24-25
Remember, we are stewards. Take excellent care of your small to college kids. These gifts to you have that pesky thing we call free will. We cannot force them to be Christians, but we can teach them short lessons in the Bible at night (by parents, not the TV!) and prayer. In Sunday School they can, at the very least, learn about Jesus’ sacrifice. We can show them who is the mom, who is the dad, and a good work ethic.
Single parents have it tough- they have to be both mother and father- and that’s a hard job. Finding a man (a real man of God, not the milk toast we so often see in churches wherein Jesus is a warrior, He defeated death and Hades! That’s tough guy stuff) where your sons and daughters can learn the role of a good, strong Christian man, where sons become men of honor, and women treated with the respect and love they deserve. Mom’s cannot do that. Sorry, Mom.
The good news is they live under your roof, eat the food you buy and prepare. It’s not a democracy. I believe family chores are not optional. They teach teamwork, respect for parents, and how to be leaders and followers. Whether you have one child or ten.
Folly is bound up in the heart of a childProverbs 22:15
But… many parents will experience their children rebelling (after age eight it gets more interesting). They know more about drugs and sex at younger ages than ever. This is when you, Mom or Dad, put your foot down and uphold the rule of law in your home, but don’t forget mercy and grace when they mess up.
I had my rebellious days, and I bet you did, too. You’re a parent, the grownup. You make the rules. Mom and Dad, you can’t be a buddy, tempting as it may be, nor contradict one another. Kids are terrific at what pushes your buttons, and they learn early to get you how to ‘give in and they promise…’
If they know upfront what the rules are, then you are ahead of the game because giving them a timeout or taking away privileges ever tell your kid he/she is being punished for something they didn’t know was part of the house rules.
Being a parent is a tough job. Enough to make you pull your hair out or go gray. But it’s the best job ever, and one bestowed on us by the ultimate Father, who loves us, provides for us, and disciplines us.
